FAVORITE GAMING MEMORIES – NFL GameDay – 989 Sports (formerly Sony Interactive Studios America) – 1996 – popularly named “the Madden Killer” –Brandon would bring in his PlayStation to work on Saturday’s to play NFL GameDay. GameDay introduced the stiff-arm mechanic. Both NFL GameDay and 989 Sports no longer exist – sports development is hard work.
Fall of 1998 – Pokemon: Indigo League releases on U.S. television in September of ’98 – Pokemon: Red and Blue are released for the Gameboy in the U.S. in November ’98 – Pokemon: Red was obtained by Alex and it was the watercooler talk for 7 year olds – Christmas comes and Alex opens up a Gameboy Color.
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater – developed by Neversoft – released 1999 – Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater #1 was enjoyed by all ages – memories of all-night sessions and the skate-park creation tool – the hosts mourn over Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 – “TONY HAWK’s PRO SKATER: WHEN GRAVITY GOES HARD” – What are our favorite Tony Hawk games?
Alex recalls his first emotional reaction to a video game: Onimusha – Capcom, Keiji Inafune – 2001; We discuss Onimusha vs. God of War.
Halo: Combat Evolved – Bungie – 2001 – released on the Original Xbox – Alex recalls his first experience with Halo and how it changed his life. Dramatic? Maybe. – Halo four player split-screen sessions. Halo maps are discussed.
Halo 2 – Bungie – 2004 – First midnight launches and our subsequent expectations – hear Alex’s introduction to XBOX Live and the story behind his horribly embarrassing Gamertag.
Brandon recalls his past experience with competitive gaming (prior to MLG’s existence): Quake 2 – id Software – 1997- as well as Unreal Tournament – developed by Epic Games and Digital Extremes, notable designers: Cliff Bleszinski, James Schmalz – 1999 – What is Kentucky Fried Quake? – Quake 2 mods – Unreal Tournament weapons – Starsiege: Tribes and Tribes: Ascend are discussed.
MMORPG’s are discussed: City of Heroes (RIP) – Cryptic Studios, Paragon Studios – April 2004; World of Warcraft – Blizzard Entertainment – November 2004; Star Wars Galaxies – Sony Online Entertainment – 2003. Notable topics: First characters, open-worlds, missions/raids, and the evolution of Star Wars Galaxies. Alex is again made fun of for his Xbox Live Gamertag.
Call of Duty series -Alex placed 4th in a Modern Warfare regional tournament by using shameful tactics. He lost to an 11 year old… Go figure.
